I stepped out of the wood and onto the covered balcony where Valerie was sitting looking at the church spires in the distance. She looked up at me with worry in her eyes. “Are you alright?”

I nodded. “Fine, we’re safe now.”

“Thank God,” she said.

I poured myself some tea and sat down beside her. “So, is this house okay, or would you rather live in the city?” I asked.

She thought for a moment. “Both have advantages. Let’s go for a walk and talk about it.” I took her hand and stepped us out of the tree at ground level. As we walked, she started thinking out loud. “The tree house is great for a retreat, but I think I’d like to live in the city. There’s so much to

see and do there.”

I nodded and started to reply, when I stumbled and fell to my knees. She turned to me, staring at me. The forest was spinning around me as I fell on my face. Valerie rolled me over, looking into my eyes.

“I’m sorry, my dear, but you are far too powerful and unpredictable. And I can’t be sure that you love me enough for me to control you.”

My vision became blurry and dim.

“Too bad, too, I really liked you.”

I was having trouble concentrating.

“But thank you for removing the spymaster. My plan is now way ahead of schedule. And as soon as Father’s army gets here, I’ll be betrothed to the king.”

“Poison,” I finally realized. I reached for the roots under me, but they seemed so far away.

“I will be queen and no longer under the control of men.” She looked down at me tsking. “Such a waste.”

I felt her gathering her power, and then flames engulfed me. I was too far gone to feel any pain. My last effort before dying was reaching for the roots. I heard the peaceful song of the trees as the blackness of death claimed me.
